Chhaava Movie Plot

After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a messenger informs Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb of the news. Although Aurangzeb admits that Shivaji was his greatest enemy, he celebrates the moment, believing that the Maratha Empire will soon fall without its leader. His ministers confidently expect an easy victory.

Instead, Shivaji's son, Sambhaji Maharaj, quickly takes control of the kingdom and continues his father's fight for Swaraj. To prove that the Marathas remain strong, he launches a surprise attack on the important Mughal city of Burhanpur. The Mughal defenders are caught off guard and defeated. During the battle, Sambhaji accidentally falls into a pit containing a lion. Refusing to surrender, he fights the animal with his bare hands and kills it by tearing apart its jaws. Hearing about the attack, Aurangzeb realizes that the Maratha resistance is far from over and prepares for a massive military campaign.

Back in the Maratha capital, Sambhaji is welcomed by his wife, Yesubai, and is officially crowned as the new Chhatrapati. However, trouble also comes from within the royal family. His stepmother, Soyarabai, secretly works with court officials, including Annaji Datto, to remove Sambhaji from the throne and crown her own son, Rajaram, instead.

At the same time, Aurangzeb's armies attack villages across the Deccan. They burn homes, kill innocent people, commit terrible acts of violence, and capture many villagers as slaves. Meanwhile, Aurangzeb's rebellious son, Prince Akbar, seeks Sambhaji's help in overthrowing his father. Sambhaji is unsure whether to trust him, but Akbar reveals evidence that Soyarabai has secretly been communicating with him as part of her conspiracy against the king. Realizing the betrayal, Sambhaji orders the execution of the corrupt ministers involved in the plot, while Soyarabai is confronted by her own brother, the loyal Maratha commander Hambirrao Mohite.

Sambhaji leads the Maratha army using fast-moving guerrilla tactics instead of fighting large battles. The difficult mountains and forests of the Deccan help the Marathas repeatedly defeat the much larger Mughal forces. Humiliated by these failures, Aurangzeb vows that he will not wear his royal crown again until Sambhaji is defeated.

Soon afterward, Soyarabai dies from illness. Sambhaji takes responsibility for his younger half-brother Rajaram and later arranges his marriage to Tarabai, the daughter of Hambirrao Mohite. During the ongoing war, Hambirrao is killed in battle, leaving another great loss for the Maratha army.

Aurangzeb's daughter, Zinat-un-Nissa, tries to capture her brother Akbar, but Sambhaji protects him, honoring the promise he made. As some local rulers begin abandoning the Maratha cause, Sambhaji gathers them at Sangameshwar and inspires them to remain loyal and continue fighting for Swaraj.

Sadly, Sambhaji's location is betrayed by Yesubai's own brothers, who secretly help the Mughal army. At the time, Sambhaji is accompanied by only about 150 soldiers. The Mughals surround them in a surprise attack. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Sambhaji and his men fight with extraordinary courage. Before the battle is lost, he orders his trusted generals, Santaji Ghorpade and Dhanaji Jadhav, to escape and inform Yesubai about what has happened.

Sambhaji continues fighting until he is finally captured along with his close friend and poet, Kavi Kalash. They are taken before Aurangzeb, who offers Sambhaji his freedom if he agrees to surrender and join the Mughal Empire. Sambhaji proudly refuses, declaring that the Marathas will never give up their dream of Swaraj.

Aurangzeb orders the execution of Kavi Kalash and subjects Sambhaji to forty days of brutal torture. His wounds are covered with salt, his fingernails are torn out, hot iron rods destroy his eyesight, and his tongue is cut out. Even after suffering unbearable pain, Sambhaji refuses to bow before Aurangzeb or abandon his beliefs. He eventually dies from his injuries, becoming a martyr for the Maratha cause. Although Aurangzeb succeeds in killing him, he cannot break his spirit and quietly admits that he wishes he had a son with Sambhaji's courage and determination.

After Sambhaji's death, Yesubai refuses to let the Maratha resistance end. She encourages the people to continue the struggle and crowns Rajaram as the next Chhatrapati. Under new leadership, the Marathas carry on the fight that Sambhaji sacrificed his life to protect.

The story ends by revealing that Sambhaji's sacrifice was not in vain. Within a few decades of his execution, the Maratha Empire grew stronger, while the Mughal Empire declined and eventually collapsed, fulfilling the dream of Swaraj that Shivaji and Sambhaji had dedicated their lives to defending.
